Overview

Good documentary typography is almost invisible: it tells you where you are, who is speaking and when, then gets out of the way.

Editorial Titles is eight compositions we return to on our own films, set in Instrument Serif with Poppins and Space Mono for the small print.

  • Chapter: a whispered label above a serif headline
  • Location: an italic place name with its coordinates
  • Quote: a pull quote with attribution
  • Name and Role: a drawn rule, a name, a vocation
  • Date Stamp: a monospaced moment in the corner
  • Centered Title: a large serif that comes slowly into focus
  • Split Title: two words drifting in from the edges
  • Section Card: an oversized numeral and a quiet name

Each one breathes in and out gently, and the movement adapts to the length of the clip. Trim it, and the exit follows. Text, font, size and colour are all in the Inspector.

The fonts are included, all free under the SIL Open Font License. Install the .drfx and you'll find the set under Titles › Ocre.

  • lower third
